In this keynote address from the 2019 NL Deep Dive Conference, Philip Tedeschi presents emerging research and examples of the important roles that animals can play in responding to trauma. He reviews some of the important ways that animals are being incorporated into clinical responses to trauma, and discusses how the integration of animals into the process of therapy may have important and beneficial impacts on individual healing. Case examples and clinical methods are shared with an emphasis on animals’ natural capacity for engagement in dynamic therapeutic relational play. Ethical considerations of including animals in trauma response are discussed.
