- Stephen Jenkinson

It is "how" we encounter grief that makes all the difference...for us and for our clients.

A Natural Life: Love & Grief Are Connected is where we make a date with grief, and work through the "how" in community.

Designed by The Natural Lifemanship Institute, this virtual conference will bring together a community of helpers and healers from all over the world, to guide us in the art of grieving—so that we may remember the well of love that rests within it.

Testimonials From Previous Attendees

Ashley Decker

"I want to thank Bettina + Tim, and the entire Natural Lifemanship team for putting on, hands down, the best virtual conference I've ever attended. In other events, it feels like you are on a never ending cascade of webinars and it's so easy to fatigue out.  Totally opposite of my experience this weekend.”

"Natural Lifemanship Conference is a must attend conference! Not only will you come away with a ton of knowledge, you will leave with new friends, new connections and a joyous soul!"

- Jim Harlow, LPC

"I had my first few sessions back after the conference and I believe they were the richest, deepest sessions I have had with clients and my horses in a long time because of the new tools I learned from this conference. I can't wait to go back and watch the presentations I missed and re-watch the others. I so very much appreciate the hard work and wisdom you all brought to this experience. Thank you so much."

Conference Schedule

Friday, July 23rd

9:00 – 9:30 AM:  The Somatic Experience of Grief and Love with Bettina Shultz-Jobe and Laura McFarland

Grief and love are experienced not only by the mind, but also by the body - neither is intended to be stagnant, but profoundly dynamic .  Bettina and Laura will guide us in connecting to and noticing our bodies, especially today, as we care for the grief that is carried within us.

10:00 – 11:30 AM:  Keynote - The Skills of Deep Living: Living a Life of Love and of Grief with Stephen Jenkinson

Our capacity for love is only as deep and wide as our capacity for grief - they are reflections of one another.  During this keynote, we will all join together to explore the necessary skill of grieving, so that we may open ourselves more fully to love.

12:00 – 12:30 PM:  Connection During Separation with Patrice Karst (author of The Invisible String) and Bettina Shultz-Jobe

Connection is not just a feeling experienced when in close proximity to a beloved other, we can, and we must, find connection also during separation.  Natural Lifemanship calls this connected detachment.  Join us as we consider the invisible strings that bind us to our loved ones, whether nearby, or far, far away.

1:30 – 3:00 PM: Our Dance with Grief, It Started So Long Ago with Tim Jobe and Bettina Shultz-Jobe

Our earliest relationships in life affect just about everything we do, including how we grieve.  Our ability to feel connection during closeness(what we call attachment) AND during separation (what we call detachment) impacts our capacity for security, for grief, and ultimately, our capacity for love.  Once again, how we attach and detach is EVERYTHING. Tim and Bettina will demonstrate this foundational NL Principle through demonstration with a horse.

3:30- 4:00 PM: Building an Internal Sense of Connection with Jenn Pagone

We can feel like we’ve lost connection with our core selves when we lose someone or something that was a pivotal component of how we live and experience ourselves. Jenn will facilitate a meditation to help you deepen your relationship with self and get acquainted with the parts of you that are holding grief. Learn how to honor and heal these heroic parts, while learning to build an internal sense of connection to self and others - leading to greater awareness and balance.

Saturday, July 24th

9:00 – 10:00 AM: Moving In and Moving Out: Working with Embodied Grief with Mark Taylor

Grief is held in the body, not in the mind.  Recognizing that physical and physiological constrictions are protective mechanisms to avoid a crushing tide of emotion, Taylor will present simple tools for inviting grief to move safely.  Mark will invite you to stay present in the moment and avoid becoming overwhelmed. Embodied grief is an ongoing practice, a form of mindfulness, and a portal to the realms of joy, love, and gratitude, as well as easier and more pleasurable movement. By yielding progressively into the body, grief can transform from an uncontrolled physiological chain-reaction of suffering into an awareness of loss that no longer controls our behaviors.

10:30 – 12:00 AM:  Working with Children and Families Who Have Experienced Loss with Michelle Holling-Brooks

Just like adults, children learn the practice of grieving day by day and moment by moment.  Being in nature and in relationship with animals provides a beautiful space for this learning to happen.  How do our own perspectives on grief impact the way we support grieving children and their families? We will explore not only best practices for working with grief in children and families, but also the beliefs and experiences that keep us from fully showing up for them.

12:15 - 12:45 PM: Something to Hold Onto with Kate Naylor

Transitional objects can be a powerful tool for supporting an internal sense of connection - they are a tangible tether for people, places, and memories.  Kate will lead a group psychodrama in which participants will practice connecting to and drawing strength from a special, handmade transitional “worry bird” sent to you from Natural Lifemanship. Register by June 25th to receive your gift!

1:30 - 2:30 PM:  What To Do When a Program Horse Dies with Bettina Shultz-Jobe, Tim Jobe, Sue McKinney, and Reccia Jobe

The loss of a program horse has a wide ripple effect, and is an opening through which powerful clinical work can be done. Learning to grieve takes practice, and what better way to practice than in a supportive, therapeutic community?  Join Tim and Bettina of NL, Sue of Barnabas, and Reccia Jobe of Pecan Creek Ranch in exploring the how and why of working through grief when a program horse dies - not only for the clients, but for the therapy team and the rest of the herd as well.

3:00 – 4:30 PM: Ceremony and Ritual for Grief & Change with Katie Asmus

Ceremony & Ritual have been practiced throughout time and across cultures to mark important life transitions, support letting go of aspects of our lives, and to acknowledge the inevitability of stepping into new circumstances and ways of being.  Due to varying factors in our modern world, many find themselves amidst people from diverse backgrounds and beliefs, thus, not having collective ceremonies to support these transitions. Join Katie as she takes you through how to create personally meaningful & culturally relevant ceremonies and rituals for yourself and your clients with a focus on rituals for supporting grief. This conversation will also prepare you for the ceremony Katie will guide us in together tomorrow.  (Please remember that the ceremony on Sunday will not be recorded!)

Sunday, July 25th

This day will provide special and intimate moments for us to gather together in community and ceremony. Therefore, events on this day will NOT be recorded.

12:00 - 12:30 PM:  The Energy of Grief and Release in the Body with Michelle Holling Brooks

1:00 - 2:30 PM:  Honoring Change: A Community Rite of Passage with Katie Asmus

Come ready to authentically engage in a sacred community space as we reflect on what in our lives is ready to be let go, what is taking root, and what wants to be celebrated. Collectively we will ceremonially honor and embody our individual transitions and open to deep transformation!  This ceremony will be personal and intimate and will not be recorded!

3:00 - 3:45 PM:   Small Group Connecting

Join a small group of conference participants to process thoughts, feelings, and sensations that have arisen during the community rite of passage.

3:45 – 4:00 PM:  Closing Ceremony
