“Love is a way of grieving that which has not yet slipped away.”

- Stephen Jenkinson

This past summer we came together for a powerful shared experience. A Natural Life: Love & Grief Are Connected was designed by The Natural Lifemanship Institute, to walk you through the inevitable process of grieving, so that you could walk clients through theirs.

This conference was only the beginning. Over the next several months, we will  continue to guide you in the art of grieving by giving you access to the conference recordings which feature powerful speakers and teachers from around the world, and presenting experiential workshops on the topics of love and grief.

After all, grief and loss work is just too powerful to cover in a 3-day weekend.

Testimonials From Those Who Attended Live

"When I reflect on this conference, I see technicolor! This was a rich, challenging, nurturing and layered experience that fully supported the notion of showing up for our own work and our own healing."

- Lara Veon

"I found support and validation in how I am processing my own grief through this conference, as well as how I can explain grief (not just in death but in change) and support my clients."

- Cheryl M Meola, PhD, LCMHCS

"This was an incredible conference that gave me tools for our work with clients, but more importantly supported me in my own grief and loss. The community was felt - even virtually. Thank you NL!"

- Cindy Skelton-Hodge

"This conference is NOT only about horses at all - it is about the process of grief, loss and its connection with love and the reality of life. It is a way for us to tune in to the needs of our clients while nurturing our own experiences and shedding light on the process and how to safely and comfortably step into grief."

- Jessica Lynn Shell

"In this time of virtual meetings, the challenge to create intimacy and connection via the internet can be a tremendous stretch, especially with a topic as raw as Grief and Love. Done. The sensation of being held and connected with "the invisible string" flowed throughout the conference. With gratitude."

- Beverly Walsh, PhD. Brookside Ranch

Conference Presentations (Recorded)

Each of the following recorded presentations are available with the All Access Pass.

Should "Grief & Loss" Be Considered a Specialization? with Kate Naylor & Bettina Shultz-Jobe

As human beings, we are already experts in grief and loss. Yet, it’s “how” we experience this loss that makes all the difference. So, should there be a separate specialty in the mental health field on grief and loss? Or should mental health therapists simply be equipped to guide clients in seeing and accepting their own expertise?  During this workshop you will somatically explore the “work of grief” you are currently doing.

How to Prepare for Your Journey With Love and Grief with Bettina Shultz-Jobe

We want to ensure you are prepared to embark on this transformative journey. We will break down what you need and how to prepare your internal and external space for effective healing.

The Somatic Experience of Grief and Love with Bettina Shultz-Jobe and Laura McFarland

Grief and love are experienced not only by the mind, but also by the body - neither is intended to be stagnant, but profoundly dynamic .  Bettina and Laura will guide us in connecting to and noticing our bodies, especially today, as we care for the grief that is carried within us.

Keynote - The Skills of Deep Living: Living a Life of Love and of Grief with Stephen Jenkinson

Our capacity for love is only as deep and wide as our capacity for grief - they are reflections of one another.  During this keynote, we will all join together to explore the necessary skill of grieving, so that we may open ourselves more fully to love.

Connection During Separation with Patrice Karst (author of The Invisible String) and Bettina Shultz-Jobe

Connection is not just a feeling experienced when in close proximity to a beloved other, we can, and we must, find connection also during separation.  Natural Lifemanship calls this connected detachment.  Join us as we consider the invisible strings that bind us to our loved ones, whether nearby, or far, far away.

Our Dance with Grief, It Started So Long Ago with Tim Jobe and Bettina Shultz-Jobe

Our earliest relationships in life affect just about everything we do, including how we grieve.  Our ability to feel connection during closeness(what we call attachment) AND during separation (what we call detachment) impacts our capacity for security, for grief, and ultimately, our capacity for love.  Once again, how we attach and detach is EVERYTHING. Tim and Bettina will demonstrate this foundational NL Principle through demonstration with a horse.

Building an Internal Sense of Connection with Jenn Pagone

We can feel like we’ve lost connection with our core selves when we lose someone or something that was a pivotal component of how we live and experience ourselves. Jenn will facilitate a meditation to help you deepen your relationship with self and get acquainted with the parts of you that are holding grief. Learn how to honor and heal these heroic parts, while learning to build an internal sense of connection to self and others - leading to greater awareness and balance.

Moving In and Moving Out: Working with Embodied Grief with Mark Taylor

Grief is held in the body, not in the mind.  Recognizing that physical and physiological constrictions are protective mechanisms to avoid a crushing tide of emotion, Taylor will present simple tools for inviting grief to move safely.  Mark will invite you to stay present in the moment and avoid becoming overwhelmed. Embodied grief is an ongoing practice, a form of mindfulness, and a portal to the realms of joy, love, and gratitude, as well as easier and more pleasurable movement. By yielding progressively into the body, grief can transform from an uncontrolled physiological chain-reaction of suffering into an awareness of loss that no longer controls our behaviors.

Working with Children and Families Who Have Experienced Loss with Michelle Holling-Brooks

Just like adults, children learn the practice of grieving day by day and moment by moment.  Being in nature and in relationship with animals provides a beautiful space for this learning to happen.  How do our own perspectives on grief impact the way we support grieving children and their families? We will explore not only best practices for working with grief in children and families, but also the beliefs and experiences that keep us from fully showing up for them.

Something to Hold Onto with Kate Naylor

Transitional objects can be a powerful tool for supporting an internal sense of connection - they are a tangible tether for people, places, and memories.  Kate will lead a group psychodrama in which participants will practice connecting to and drawing strength from a special, handmade transitional “worry bird” sent to you from Natural Lifemanship. Register by June 25th to receive your gift!

What To Do When a Program Horse Dies with Bettina Shultz-Jobe, Tim Jobe, Sue McKinney, and Reccia Jobe

The loss of a program horse has a wide ripple effect, and is an opening through which powerful clinical work can be done. Learning to grieve takes practice, and what better way to practice than in a supportive, therapeutic community?  Join Tim and Bettina of NL, Sue of Barnabas, and Reccia Jobe of Pecan Creek Ranch in exploring the how and why of working through grief when a program horse dies - not only for the clients, but for the therapy team and the rest of the herd as well.

Ceremony and Ritual for Grief & Change with Katie Asmus

Ceremony & Ritual have been practiced throughout time and across cultures to mark important life transitions, support letting go of aspects of our lives, and to acknowledge the inevitability of stepping into new circumstances and ways of being.  Due to varying factors in our modern world, many find themselves amidst people from diverse backgrounds and beliefs, thus, not having collective ceremonies to support these transitions. Join Katie as she takes you through how to create personally meaningful & culturally relevant ceremonies and rituals for yourself and your clients with a focus on rituals for supporting grief. This conversation will also prepare you for the ceremony Katie will guide us in together tomorrow.  (Please remember that the ceremony on Sunday will not be recorded!)
